BiaSHEara: Vendor Spotlight: M & Z Event Management!

Hello everyone! Today's blog post is exciting as I get to feature two amazing Event Planners! Maryam and Zuhur of M & Z Event Management. I am featuring them as part of the BiaSHEara series which focuses on highlighting the work of women who are of East African heritage and who are entrepreneurs serving the Greater Toronto Area. However please note that the BiaSHEara blog series also features "womenpreneurs" from all different backgrounds as well (as you will have noticed if you have read past blog posts).

I first heard of the M & Z Event Management team when they contacted me about shooting a wedding for one of their clients at the beginning of this year (See that wedding HERE!). They showed up to my client meeting along with the bride and asked all the right questions about the way I shoot weddings. This was key as it ensured that we were all on the same page. On the wedding day they were very professional and took their jobs seriously. Amongst the many services they provided, I was most impressed with the fact that they made sure to take the time to communicate the agenda to the photographer during the course of events (I know it sounds like that should be a given, but I have seen my fair share of "planners" and "coordinators" who just don't think this is important for some reason) this included making sure the bride's entrance was smooth which allowed me to do the videography and photography at the same time all by myself (something I rarely ever do due to the logistics of it all).

M and Z Event Management also assisted me in planning and successfully executing a "Styled Wedding Shoot" earlier this year. With their help we were able to put together a great styled shoot with one of the most dedicated teams. Stay tuned for some exciting news on that styled shoot!

If you are looking for planners for your event, bridal shower or wedding then get in touch with them at the following e-mail: or you can also visit their instagram page HERE.

Details from Newal and Ibrahim's Wedding

Today I have the utmost pleasure of sharing some of the detail images from one of my favourite weddings of this past summer. This one was special as it was the wedding of a cousin of mine and everything about it was spectacular. The couple are Eritrean Canadians and so there were many elements of Eritrean culture that were featured during the wedding. I will only be sharing details due to the privacy request by the couple.

This was a cousin from the Aberra side of my family woop woop! (had to give them a shout out). If you don't know, the Aberra brothers (one of which was my grandfather on my mother's side) were the original entrepreneurs out of Eritrea, they ran one of the largest bus lines in the city of Asmara back in the day, and though those days are long gone they are forever one of my entrepreneurial inspirations!

Anyway back to this wedding... it really all was amazing from the venue, to the outfits, to the opportunity to see so many of our relatives (Aberra family members) who turned up in large numbers from all over North America and the World!  Thank you to Newal and Ibrahim for having me as your photographer to capture your special day! Congratulations!

The bride's bouquet for the wedding was stunning and was created by Zuhoor Designs. It was requested by the bride for it to look like one big rose. Apparently this is called a "Glamelia" in the world of floristry. Let me say that"Glamelia" was something! I had certainly never seen anything like it in all the weddings I have covered.

The "Bride and Groom" Champagne Glasses were super cute. P.S Of course it was non-alcoholic champagne that got served

Each of the bridesmaids at the wedding wore one of the lovely headbands shown below

Wooo check out that rock! I love the rectangular design! Oh and those shoes again my oh my!

I incorporated the "N" and "I" letter lights from their Nikkah Party (which I photographed earlier in the year) in this detail shot below.

The 5- tier cake was certainly one of the largest I have ever seen. I liked that it was simple but had those beautiful lace details and pops of red roses.

It was beautiful to see all the women dressed up in their colourful yellow Zurias serving the food. Each group of women wore a different colour of Zuria based on their affiliations with one another.

The dancing was off the hook and apart from the Habesha and Arabic songs I have to say I will forever link French Montana's song "Unforgettable" to this wedding as it was played a couple of times at the reception and Melse (how fitting as it was an unforgettable wedding)

A Melse is a traditional Eritrean/Ethiopian wedding event that happens on the second day of a wedding. The Melse at this wedding featured tons of cultural touches and lots and lots of dancing!

What a colourful backdrop! The decor specialist (Rami Decor) did some great work on this traditional decor setting

Injera is usually served on a platter for the bride and groom to share with their bridal party

Hambasha is a type of sweet bread that is served with traditional coffee after a meal.

Finally since it pretty much rained all day on the actual wedding day, we simply did not have the ability to do outdoor shots so we scheduled a post wedding bridal session and I have to say I absolutely loved the images like the one below. Remember brides this is always an option if you were not able to do portraits on your wedding day for one reason or another. Getting back in to your wedding dress on a less hectic day than your actual wedding day can result in a fun shoot!

Okay so I hope you enjoyed this blog post! Watch out for a number of blog posts coming up in the following weeks! Until next time...

Details from Z and M's Wedding!

Hey y'all! Hope you are having a lovely fall season so far! I personally am loving fall this year which is odd as I used to dread this time of the year! However what can I say, the opportunity to wear layers and drink Hot chocolate while cozying up with a blanket (not that it's that cold yet) to read a book has just won me over! I am currently in editing season, trying to wrap up all the weddings I had the opportunity to cover this past summer and so here is a blog post of one of those beautiful weddings! Due to client privacy requests however I can only share details from this wedding. Enjoy the blog post!

Caryma's Portraits

It's not too often (maybe about 5 times in my life now lol) that I have come across another person on this earth with essentially the same name as myself (well if you ignore the spelling in this case lol), so you can imagine my joy when I saw an inquiry for a photo session by a Toronto lawyer named Caryma. What were the odds!

We had the photoshoot in the lovely neighbourhood of Kensington Market as this is where Caryma spends a lot of her time and it is quite close to her office. I personally just love Kensington Market as there are so many amazing backgrounds and features in this neighbourhood, that it really gives any portrait session a unique pop!

To find out more about the work Caryma is doing/does, check out her firm [S]ADVOCACY for your legal needs!

Safia and Abdurahman's "Golden Elegance" Wedding

Hi Hi Hi! It's been a while but welcome to my latest blog post! This wedding took place at the Verdi Convention Centre in the West end of Toronto. I can only share details from this wedding due to client request but as usual the details were beautiful! The colour scheme for this wedding was filled with touches of gold, and it all looked so elegant. The bride had two entrances and opted for a most lovely Sari for her first entrance while her bridesmaids wore a simple but chic Diraq (traditional Somali outfit)! For the second entrance, the bride wore a lovely white dress with a a gorgeous low cut back.  Some interesting things about this wedding were that it featured the traditional Buranbur (A Somali traditional dance circle) and some live Somali Singers. One really cool thing though was the custom ice sculpture that was done by Nandasins, a man who took second place (if I remember correctly) at last year's Bloor-Yorkville Ice Sculpture competition (see last photo in blog post for image of ice-sculpture)! Nandasins and his wife also cater desserts and were at the event at the time, setting up their dessert stand. I had a quick chat with him and that's how I found out about him being a past winner of the Ice sculpture competition. All in all the details from this wedding were beautiful and I think it serves as a beautiful inspiration for those thinking of going with Gold as part of their Wedding colour scheme!

I still have dates open for summer weddings up until the date of September 1st. Get in touch if you are still looking for a photographer.

A Cinematography Post! Vintage Themed Styled Shoot

Hi Hi Hi! Today's post is exciting for me as after a very long time I am finally releasing the video I shot and edited from a styled shoot that I planned and organized along with my friend Husaina from HBaraya Photography.  We had a very talented team of vendors and team members come together to bring the shoot to life and I have to give them all a shoutout on here so here goes:

Photography at this shoot was done by Husaina Baraya of HBaraya PhotographyHusaina was such a lovely partner to team with and it was a pleasure to work with her. You can soon see her new website at

The absolutely stunning dresses that the models wore were generously provided by the designer Mishal of Behsah

The beautiful beautiful floral Headpieces, bouquets and centrepieces were done by none other than Bilquees of Zuhoor Designs, and it was stunning. If you have read my blog posts before, you will have noticed that she has done the flowers for majority of the weddings I have covered and that is because she is simply the best out there. None other like her.

Brittany Lynn of Events By B.lynn researched her way into setting the scene for us with the vintage victorian theme. Along with her right hand woman Brenda, they were able to take us back in time.

Castlefied Designs provided us with two beautiful invitations for the two looks and I loved the colours! Sophie the designer and founder, is amazing at what she does but I really don't need to tell you that, as her work speaks for itself.

Nada of Vanilla Bean Cakery  went way out of her way to design the two beautiful cakes for the shoot and WOW WOW WOW you have to see the beautiful purple cake she created. To say it was stunning would be very much an understatement. I am not just saying this but I truly believe she is one of the most talented cake designers that I have come across in my time as a wedding photographer.

Noura of Nur Artistry did a fabulous job on the Make-Up and we appreciated that she came all the way from Kitchener to be a part of the shoot. I think she did a most lovely job showcasing the two looks.

I can't thank Yasmin Mathurin enough for assisting us with the shoot that day and offering all the advice she had when it comes to film-making, like letting us know where exactly the reflectors should be placed lol. She is a great journalist and film-maker, with a passion that is inspiring.

Our Models Kate and Lisa were incredibly fabulous! We are grateful for their patience.

Finally I would like to thank Natasha of Natasha Events and Travel for finding some time out of her day to come assist us with the shoot. We truly appreciated it

So... do check out the video above (hit the HD button) and enjoy all the details featured in this shoot. It was a lovely one!

Also see below for some of the lovely photos taken by Husaina and go follow her photography page on Instagram!!!
